Here my take on Apple’s recent iPhone 15 event:
Apple’s Wonderlust event was full of surprises, but not all of them were good. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights of the event, and why you might want to wait before buying the new iPhone 15.
The Good
- The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature a new color-infused back glass with a textured matte finish, which looks sleek and elegant. The colors are pink, yellow, green, blue, and black, and they match the Dynamic Island display on the front. The Dynamic Island is an innovative way to interact with important alerts and Live Activities, such as maps, music, sports scores, and more. It’s like having a mini Apple Watch on your iPhone screen.
- The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max come in a titanium design, which is more durable and scratch-resistant than aluminum. They also have a customizable Action button, which can be programmed for a variety of functions, such as launching the camera, opening Siri, or calling your mom. The Pro models also have a 5x telephoto lens, which lets you zoom in closer to your subjects without losing quality.
- The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are the most advanced smartwatches ever. They have a brighter display, a faster processor, and a new Double Tap gesture that lets you answer phone calls by tapping your thumb and index finger together twice. The Ultra 2 is also carbon neutral, which means it has no net impact on the environment.
The Bad
- The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have a 48MP main camera, which sounds impressive, but it’s not. The default mode is actually 24MP, which means you have to manually switch to the higher resolution if you want to take advantage of it. And even then, the photos are not that much better than the ones from the iPhone 14. Plus, the higher resolution takes up more storage space and battery life.
- The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have USB-C, which is great for compatibility with other devices, but it also means you have to buy new cables and adapters if you want to use your old accessories. And don’t even think about using your wired EarPods anymore, because Apple is only selling USB-C versions of them now. And if you live in Europe, you have no choice but to use USB-C, because Apple had to comply with the EU’s mandate.
- The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are very expensive. The Series 9 starts at $399, and the Ultra 2 starts at $799. That’s a lot of money for a device that you have to charge every day and replace every few years. And if you want to use the Roadside Assistance via satellite feature, which connects you to AAA if you have car trouble while off the grid, you have to pay an extra monthly fee.
The Ugly
- The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have a new contoured edge on the aluminum enclosure, which makes them look like they came from the early 2000s. It’s not very ergonomic or comfortable to hold, and it makes the phone look bulky and outdated. It also makes it harder to find cases that fit properly.
- The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have a new titanium design, which is more durable and scratch-resistant than aluminum, but it also makes them heavier and colder to touch. They also have a new color option called “space gray”, which is actually just black with a slight tint of blue. It looks dull and boring compared to the other colors.
- The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 have a new Double Tap gesture that lets you answer phone calls by tapping your thumb and index finger together twice. This sounds cool in theory, but in practice it’s very awkward and unreliable. Sometimes it doesn’t work at all, sometimes it works too well and answers calls when you don’t want to, and sometimes it triggers other functions that you didn’t intend to.
So there you have it: the good, the bad, and the ugly of Apple’s Wonderlust event. If you’re still interested in buying the new iPhone 15 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 after reading this blog post, then good luck to you. But if you’re like me, you might want to wait until Apple fixes some of these issues or releases something better next year.
